Vytautas Landsbergis
A leader of Sajudis, 1988-1990 and Lithuanian chief of state, 1990-1992. The scion of two distinguished lines of Lithuanian intellectuals, Landsbergis in Soviet times was a musicologist, specializing in the work of Mykolas Čiurlionis, a Lithuanian artist and composer.
Romas Kalanta
His self-immolation in 1972 became a focus of public protest against Soviet rule in Lithuania.
Antanas Sniečkus
First Secretary of the Lithuanian Communist Party, 1940 until his death in 1974. .Sniečkus (1903-1974) joined the party as a teenager and in the 1920s studied at the Plekhanov institute in Moscow.
Vladimir Dekanozov
Vladimir Dekanozov ( 1899-1953 ) was Moscow’s chief agent in imposing Soviet rule in Lithuania in 1940. Dekanozov, a candidate member of the CPSU Central Committee and Deputy People’s Commissar for Foreign Affairs, was known as Lavrentii Berias man.
Algirdas Brazauskas
The last First Secretary of the Lithuanian Communist Party (1988-1990) and the first popularly elected president of the Republic of Lithuania (1993-1998).
